The Kuvasz is a dog classified in the group of Giant dog breeds. It is a guard dog for livestock and farms. Its wedge-shaped, proportional head is one of its most distinguishing features from the others shepherd dogs.

History:
It is a Hungarian shepherding dog known in that territory since Ancient Times. Its ancestors appeared at the same time that the Magyars occuppied the Carpathian basin; they used these dogs as guardians and livestock guards against raptors and thieves. Due to its hunting instinct it was mostly used as a hunting dog during the time of the Matthias Corvinus Kingdom. As the shepherding desisted, its ancient use has become more occasional, which is why they firstly appeared in villages and later in cities.
As well as the Kuvasz, its shepherding partners (Komondor, Pumi, Mudi y Puli) are Hungarian dogs with an uncertain origin. It is thought that its ancestors appeared in Hungary in the year 896 when the Prince Arpad Magyar tribes set up in the Pannonian Steppe. Some researchers believe that while the Komondor could have been a livestock guard, the Kuvasz was the company of war and hunting horsemen. Another theory consists in the appearance of the breed’s ancestors during the Turkish invasions in the 13th century.
Characteristics:
A Kuvazs is a big-sized, strong dog, which has a hairy, wavy and white coat. Its appearance radiates strength. All its body parts are proportional, its body is harmonious. Its osseous skeleton is powerful but not coarse. The skull must be slightly arched and the wedge-shaped snout must not be too long. It has V-shaped, trailing ears, placed on its head. The body is a little long, and its ribs slightly stick out. The paws are robust. The tail is long and slightly curved on its tip, where there is a nice crest. The coat is long, rough and wavy. The color is pure white, but ivory is also recognized.
It has a powerful figure, a lively temperament and a great agility. Its appearance gives the impression of a tireless and effective power.
Temperament:
The Kuvasz is a loyal, trustful dog which loves its owner and its territory. It is characteristically brave and fearless. It will always defend people and properties whose defense and custody is on its charge, at any cost. Its needs to do a lot of exercise and to be always busy.
Maintenance:
Its maintenance is simple and its coat is also resistant to bad weather conditions. The Kuvasz moults its coat by season. It is important to keep in mind that it is a dog with a strong temperament, which is why it must have an early education and it may test the educator’s patience. It needs an adequate space so it can move freely and exercise.
Health:
They are prone to suffer hip dysplasia. These dogs could be also affected by minor problems like Osteochondritis Dissecans, which is an illness which causes limp and the inflammation of the shoulder’s joints. They also tend to have skin diseases, allergic reactions and babeohyuu.
