ALLOWED COLOURS

History:

Welsh Corgi ancestors are descendants from a dog introduced by Visigoths in Wales in the IX century. We can find two different types of breeds with this name: the Welsh Corgi Pembroke and the Welsh Corgi Cardigan. The second one is the most ancient of them and earned its fame sheepherding. The Pembroke was born as a result of the cross between these Corgis with northern dogs brought by Flemish knitters in the last stages of the XI century. Both breeds were crossed until the end of the 30s. Since then, breeders started emphasizing their differences. In 1934, they were officially recognized as two different breeds.

This breed was used for sheepherding. In those days, peasants were allowed to shepherd in the unfenced fields which belonged to the Crown, but that made the cattle get lost and so, it was necessary for them an intelligent, fast type of dog, which could shepherd the cattle easily. The Pembroke is this type of dog, which pushes the cattle by their heels. Its short height allowed it to run under the cattle without being kicked.

Characteristics:

It is a robust, strong, short, long dog with short limbs. Its head is similar to the fox’s and its eyes are round. It has medium sized, erect ears and a short tail. Its coat has a medium length; is straight and it can be of many colors like red, jet black, beige or black and tan; usually with white markings.

Despite Cardigans and Pembrokes are relatives, its breed description is different. The Pebroke is small sized, strong, alert, and active, and with a robust structure, which gives it the appearance of power and determination on its small body. Its head’s shape and appearance is similar to the fox’s, with an alert and intelligent look. The tail is short, preferentially natural, but when puppies are born with a long tail, it is almost completely docked.

Despite the fact that it is a breed which was originally bred for shepherding, it has evolved as a pet, and it is the favorite breed of the British Royal Family. It is an excellent guardian and a constant companion.

Maintenance:

The Welsh Corgi Pembroke easily adapts to any space and does not need to doa lotof exercise, it can stay all day at home. It just needs to run and play.

Its coat does not need any special maintenance; brushing it with a stiff bristle brush once a week is enough.

Health:

This is an extremely active dog, but the tendency of being pets in small houses reduces its energy levels. If it is also fed in excess, it will quickly develop obesity. An average dog needs between 150 and 300 grams of balanced diet a day. The Corgi is characteristically insatiable, which makes it eat a lot without ever being satisfied; its feeding must be monitored.

Because of its spine’s length they are particularly sensitive to overweight, which may cause osteoarthritis, an illness which reduces its life quality and expectancy.

This breed also tends to suffer hip dysplasia, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, Von Willebrand’s disease and degenerative myelopathy.
