ALLOWED COLOURS

History:

It’s a hound which comes from Malta. Their ancestors go back to the Ancient Egypt, where we find representations of these dogs on the walls of the tombs of the pharaohs. It is believed that the Pharaoh Hound arrived in Malta thanks to the Phoenicians and spread throughout the Mediterranean. For centuries, in rural areas, pheasants used it to hunt rabbits. Currently, it is being used as a companion dog and as therapy dog in people with physical or mental difficulties.

Characteristics: :

Haughty and slender, the Pharaoh’s hound has a triangular head, almost without stop, with two amber or dark brown eyes, carrying long erect and stiff ears. The belly is fine and the back is straight and strong. The body consists of long, dry-line muscles. The tail is curved and it is low-set, though when it is happy it carries it high.

The coat is fine and short, without fringes, of silky texture and should never be so abundant as to be away from the skin of the dog.
Pharaoh’s male dogs tend to be between 55 and 63 cm tall, and to weigh from 21 to 26 kg. Females tend to be between 52 and 61 cm, and weigh from 20 to 25 kg.

Temperament:

It is lively, friendly, very intelligent, a little shy, susceptible, sensitive and does not like to be harassed. On the other hand, with its owner and other members of the family it shows loyal, affectionate and playful. Because of its strong hunter instinct, it doesn’t usually get on too well with small pets.

Maintenance:

The Pharaoh Hound is not difficult to maintain. It is only necessary to remove dead and loose hair with a rubber brush. Give it a bath with dry shampoo only when necessary. It is a very clean dog, but it needs a responsible control on its eyes and ears to avoid infections.

The Pharaoh’s dog adapts perfectly to apartments, although it would be ideal to have a large place where it could move freely. It needs to go for a daily walk and exercise regularly.

It is important to socialize it at an early age to avoid becoming extremely shy.

Health:

It is a dog very sensitive to medication and insecticides. Due to the fragility of the tail, it may suffer fractures. Calluses may also occur in the elbows.

Life expectancy is from 12 to 14 years.
