History:

For a long time it was believed that it descended from the German shepherd, but there are records that the white Swiss shepherds existed long before the standard of German Shepherd that we know today; the White Shepherd was already considered a herding dog in northern Germany towards the end of 1800. It was Switzerland that was responsible for scoring in its records as a breed and carried out the complex task before the FCI to be recognized as authentic, because for a long time they were originally rejected and banned. Its conservation is largely due to the founding of the first white Shepherd clubs in the United States, in order to preserve the breed.

Several centuries ago, in and around Germany there were sheepdogs of very different morphologies according to the region to which they belonged. All of them had in common the being smart dogs, resistant and with a great capacity for work. From one of these specimens of white color, at the end of the nineteenth century, the Prussian cavalry officer Von Stephanitz determined and developed the standard of the German Shepherd. In the beginning this standard did not give much importance to the appearance as it gave to the mental stability and the usefulness of the dogs. In those early years there were a lot of white shepherds, partly because the shepherds preferred them to other colors (at night, they were better distinguished from the wolves). In 1933, in Europe they began to disqualify the white specimens believing that they were albino dogs, unwanted disease. From the 70s things changed and the breed began to be known under the name of White Swiss Shepherd.

Characteristics:

The Swiss Shepherd is a medium-sized dog, with upright ears and a medium-long double coat. Its body is shaped as a slightly elongated rectangle.

It has a white coat or pale cream, although sometimes there is a clear carbonate (a slight shade of yellowish to brownish red) on the tip of the ears, on the back and on the tail.

Temperament:

It is a balanced and calmed dog but if the situation requires it, it shows alert and impatient. It is very obedient, intelligent and has a high comprehension capacity. It’s a vigilant dog and a little suspicious of strangers. It gets on well with kids. It enjoys running, playing to track or any other activity with its human family.

It is easy to train with good disposition for agility testing. It is a working dog with the capacity to adapt and fit into all kinds of social situations. With its owners are playful and curious, being excellent pets, although some have the tendency to be very vocal by barking, moaning and grunting.

Maintenance:

The Swiss White Shepherd is a very active dog who needs to exercise often to stay in a good physical and mental state.

Its coat is easy to maintain, except in times of moulting, which requires you to brush it daily.

It is not necessary to bathe it very often, since that weakens the hair, and just have to do it when the dogs are dirty.

Health:

The White Shepherd is, on average, healthier than many other breeds of dogs, but due to the fact that it shares genetic acquis with the breed of German Shepherd, it will be subject to many of the same congenital diseases or health problems that the breed of dog suffers.

The most common diseases in the breed are: hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, hemophilia, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, mega esophagus. Along with hereditary-type diseases such as progressive retinal atrophy.
Among the less common diseases of the breed are Addison’s disease, cataracts and hypertrophic osteodystrophy.
