History:

It is a Hungarian shepherding dog known in that territory since Ancient Times. Its ancestors appeared at the same time that the Magyars occuppied the Carpathian basin; they used these dogs as guardians and livestock guards against raptors and thieves. Due to its hunting instinct it was mostly used as a hunting dog during the time of the Matthias Corvinus Kingdom. As the shepherding desisted, its ancient use has become more occasional, which is why they firstly appeared in villages and later in cities.

As well as the Kuvasz, its shepherding partners (Komondor, Pumi, Mudi y Puli) are Hungarian dogs with an uncertain origin. It is thought that its ancestors appeared in Hungary in the year 896 when the Prince Arpad Magyar tribes set up in the Pannonian Steppe. Some researchers believe that while the Komondor could have been a livestock guard, the Kuvasz was the company of war and hunting horsemen. Another theory consists in the appearance of the breed’s ancestors during the Turkish invasions in the 13th century.
