ALLOWED COLOURS

History:

The Irish Wolfhound is one of the most ancient breeds and it is believed that they got to the Irish islands because of the Celtics in 279 B.C. For many centuries it worked as a hunter of wolves, wild boars and moose for the Irish nobility. During the XVIII and XIX century, wolves were almost extinct in Great Britain, and as a consequence, this wolfhound could have disappeared too.

The re-awaken of the interest in this breed came along with the growth of nationalism. The Irish Wolfhound became an alive symbol of the Irish culture and the Celtic past. By that epoch, the Captain G. A. Graham, a fan, got some of the few Wolf type Greyhounds which still lived in Ireland, and with some Deerhounds blood, and the occasional use of Borzois and Great Danes, he eventually got a type of dog which kept its type over centuries. The results were finally accepted as the legitimate re-awakening of the breed.

Characteristics:

The Irish Wolfhound is a big sized dog, with an imposing appearance, very muscular, fast, and strong, but with an elegant structure. It has a long head and small ears. Its tail is long and a little curved. The coat is thick and longer above the eyes and over the chin. A lot of colors are accepted.

The average height of an Irish wolfhound should be taller than that of a Great Dane. However, the wolfhound is not to be confused with being the heaviest, as its structure should be similar to that of a Greyhound, with a very broad and deep chest that tucks up.

Its color may be grey, brindle, red, black, white, fawn, and wheaten.

The Irish wolfhound was bred for long solitary hunts based solely on the dog’s ability to visualize its landscape and perceive, unlike scent hounds (such as Bloodhounds and Beagles) who rely on scent rather than sight. For this reason, the neck of an Irish wolfhound should be long with the head held high the majority of the time. The Irish wolfhound should also appear to be longer than it is tall. Once used to hunt wolves, an Irish wolfhound’s structure should appear as if it is “fast enough to catch a wolf, and strong enough to kill it”

The AKC specifies the minimum height as 32 inches (81 cm) for mature males, 30 inches (76 cm) for females; the minimum weight: 120 pounds (54 kg) for males, 105 pounds (48 kg) for females.

Temperament:

It is a quiet, pacific, discreet and independent dog. It shows very patient with children, but, as it is not too conscious of how big it is, it may be a little rough when playing. It has a cheerful, protective and obedient personality. It has a high shepherding and hunting instinct, and so is its adaptability to the coexistence with children and other dogs.

Wolfhounds often create a strong bond with their family and can become quite destructive or morose if left alone for long periods of time.

Maintenance:

Because of its big size, the Irish Wolfhound needs a lot of space. Besides it can adapt living indoors, it would be ideal for it to be comfortable in a garden. It needs between 20 and 40 minutes of daily exercise to stay healthy, and it should be feed in an elevated position to avoid a gastric torsion, which is the main problem presented by this dog breed.

Irish Wolfhound puppies grow quickly, and so a balanced diet and proper exercise are extremely important during the first years of development.

Health:

The main worry of the owners of this greyhound is its short lifespan: males tend to live around 5 to 6 years, and female 6 or 7.

Because of its big size, the Irish Wolfhound is prone to hip dysplasia and other bone disorders, even bone cancer, which is the main cause of their death.

In these dogs it is common the dilated cardiomyopathy, gastric torsion (bloat), and Progressive Retinal Atrophy.
