ALLOWED COLOURS

History:

The Golden Retriever comes from the United Kingdom, more specifically from Scotland. Bird hunting was very popular among the Scottish aristocracy, and they needed a dog which could hunt both in water and in land because of the great number of lakes and rivers in Scotland. Because of this, the Golden Retriever was born in 1850.

In 1903, the United Kingdom Kennel Club recognized this breed, as Flat Coats – Golden. It was exhibited for the first time in 1908, and it was recognized as the Retriever breed (Golden and Yellow) in 1911. 14 Years later The United States recognized the breed, and in 1925, the American Kennel Club la registered it.

Characteristics:

It is a dog with a strong structure, short renal region and very active; it has a broad skull, chest and deep and broad ribs; the kidney area and the back limbs are width and strong.

It is one of the most popular breeds in the world because of its versatility and intelligence. Currently, besides it is an excellent pet, it can be an assistance dog, a hunting dog, a police dog or even a search and rescue dog. Golden Retrievers personality is as charming as their coat, and they are considered to be an ideal dog for families of all ages.

There are two varieties of Golden Retriever, the British type, and the American-Canadian type. The main differences between them are that the British type has a wider snout, a deeper chest and a shorter tail. It is heavier than the American type, which shows an angle on its back limbs and has almond eyes. The head is big as well as the body, which is robust and athletic.

Its coat is not too long, generally straight, golden and repellent to water. In Canada there are specimens with dark Golden colors, but they follow a line of light tonalities, like golden or cream. They must never be red or chestnut.

Temperament:

It is a dog with a good temperament and very agile. It has a great sense of smell and it really likes swimming. It is an adaptable and devoted partner. It is intelligent, lively, and willing to please. It has an affable personality, and does not show any sign of aggressiveness or shyness.

Maintenance:

These are active dogs, and so they require a lot of daily exercise; although they may depend on the dog and its age.

It must be early socialized, and it can be done by doing a daily activity to avoid aggressiveness –like the need of breaking something to vent its frustration-. It needs to be mentally stimulated with training an exercise because they are good athletes and need to walk every day. If not, they will become anxious and restless dogs.

Its coat needs to be brushed once a week –and even more frequently during the molting season- to remove all the dead hair, making its coat more attractive and shiny. It is known that they molt twice a year. Serious hair loose could be a sign of illness or stress. It is also important to clean their ears regularly, or they could get an ear infection easily.

Health:

As in many other breeds, it is very common for Golden Retrievers to have hip dysplasia. It is a dog with many genetic disorders as eye diseases, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, subaortic stenosis and epilepsy.
