History:

It is one of the most ancient breeds in France, and comes from the oriental Mastiff (Tibetan Mastiff) which arrived to Europe with the barbarian horde. It is a descendant of the Alaunt, some molosser type dogs introduced to Europe by Alans, an Iranian tribe expelled by the Huns which then settled in our continent. These dogs were basically used for fighting, and before they disappeared in the V century, they had already been crossed with native dogs in Aquitaine and in the North of Spain. The result was would be later known as Dogue de Bordeaux. In the Middle Ages it turned to be a guardian dog and in the XVII century was the fashion dog of the French bourgeoisie. It achieved a new start in 1960.

It is not noisy, and it is strange to hear a Dogue de Bordeaux barking loudly if it is not for a reason (for example when a stranger gets into the house). It is a confident breed which does not need to prove anything to other dogs, unless it is challenged.

The Dogue de Bordeaux is a lovely, affectionate and friendly breed with people and small animals. It is a good dog for children because it loves being around people (a family is never too big for them) and it has a lot of patience, and so it will tolerate playing with kids.

Dominance is hereditary in the Dogue de Bordeaux, and it must be accepted and treated by its owner. It tends to be a very stubborn and arrogant breed, although it is easy to train. Once the Dogue de Bordeaux learns to obey an order, it will never forget about it.

As well as all big sized and heavy breeds, it may suffer tendon and ligament problems during the quick growth periods. During these stages, it should not be forced to do thing.
