ALLOWED COLOURS

History:

This breed was used for shepherding and started being considered as a good companion dog in the 1970, when it came to Europe. French breeders are the ones responsible for the Standard Coton de Tulear, formalized in 1970.

Characteristics:

Height bitch: 22~27 cm / Height male: 25~30 cm

Weight bitch: 26~34 kg / Weight male: 26~34 kg

The Coton de Tulear’s body is small, longer than tall and with a thin cottony layer of fur. Its limbs are muscular and its paws are small and round. On the top of its head, there are two trailing ears and some dark, round and separated eyes. Since this dog breed is born, it has a thick tail.

It has a soft coat, similar to a cotton ball, which is a characteristic of this breed. This breed stands out because of its curled tail, which is curved to the spine; its big and expressive eyes along with its short paws.

The coat is accepted by the FCI in three colors: white; black and white and three-colored.

The FCI Standard establishes a weight rate between 4 and 6kg for male and between 3.5 and 5 kg for female; and a height rate to the withers between 25-30 cm and 22-27 cm respectively. Despite that, the “Coton de Tulear Club of America” Standard specifies other weights and sizes.

Temperament:

One of the main characteristics of the Coton de Tulear’s personality is its cheerful and well-adjusted nature. It adapts easily to any life style because it is very sociable with humans and with its congeners.

Maintenance:

This is a very active dog, and so it would be ideal for it to have a garden where it could spend its time. In case it has to live in an apartment, the owner must prepare long walks through the park and game sessions.

This dog needs a responsible and strict training if it is going to live indoors. The owner must know how to calm it down and make it do some exercise when it is necessary.

The Coton de Tulear’s fur demands a lot of attention; it must be brushed frequently to keep it soft and healthy. It would be ideal to brush it daily, and if it is not possible, at least three times a week. If the dog lives outdoors, in the garden, it is recommended to wash it frequently also, once or twice a month.

Health:

The Coton de Tulear is a robust dog which is known by different illnesses, such as elbow’s dysplasia, eye problems, and prognathism.
