ALLOWED COLOURS

The Rough Collie is a medium, big sized dog, which not only has herding skills but also is a docile, loyal, kind and affectionate companion dog. It is very intelligent too; and because of that is used as police dog, guide dog, and it takes part in different novels, movies, etc.

History:

It is thought that this breed has been developed thanks to some dogs brought to Scotland by romans, which then crossed with natives. Breeders say that the slight differences between the Rough Collie and the Smooth Collie appeared when individual breeders started selecting specimens for future breeding. However, the truth is that both types are from the same group, and common lineages can be currently found.

The Rough Collie is the refined version of the original Collie, which worked with Scottish sheepherders. Rough Collies were selected from them for many centuries. Most dogs can do their job properly if they have the opportunity.

Characteristics:

Height bitch: 51~56 cm / Height male: 56~61 cm

Weight bitch: 18~25 kg / Weight male: 20~29 kg

The Collie has a harmonious and proportioned structure. It has a triangular head, with a long snout and almond eyes. Its forward folded ears are small; it has a strong neck, covered by a white coat collar. The outer coat is straight and rough; and the under coat is smooth and plentiful.

The weight and size vary in the breed’s Standard; male Collies are 55.8 to 66 cm tall to the withers; and females, 5cm less. Generally, males weigh between 20 and 29kg, and females between 18 and 25kg.

The Collie is a good companion both for children and adults; it has a natural protective instinct, especially with kids. It is naturally playful, affectionate and kind. As a watchdog, it has a loud barking and a rarely used bite. It can be trained to be quiet but lively to behave properly at home, even in a small apartment. The Collie behaves at home the same way it would do in the countryside or in the city, because it is happy as long as it is with its family.

Temperamento:

The Collie Rough is sensitive, home-loving, kind, playful and very affectionate with children. It is intelligent and learns quickly; it does not cause any trouble while being trained as long as it is treated softly and patiently.
They are never arrogant or distant; Collies are one of the best companion dogs and pets; they are very close to children and know how to watch them and protect them.

<strongMaintenance:

Despite its looks, the Rough Collie is not a simple ornament or decoration; it can easily adapt to an indoors lifestyle, but it prefers to live in open places where it can run and vent its energy.

It has to be taught since little not to bark, because as an adult it tends to be very noisy.
Its beautiful coat needs to be brushed frequently; once or twice a week is enough. It is suggested to use a bristle brush and to brush in the coat’s direction and vice versa.

The denture also needs to be maintained constantly, if not, the teeth will come loose and fall out while they are still young. It is recommended to brush them frequently and to stimulate its bite to maintain them healthy.

Health:

While Rough Collies are generally resilient and healthy, there are some skin and eye disorders that can affect the breed. Puppies which are less than a year old may endure elbow dysplasia.
