History:

This breed had its origin in Boston City, in the United States. It is considered to be one of the first dog breeds in the United States and the first American breed to be recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1893, which shows that the breed was already stable on that date. The cross-breeding that eventually culminated in this dog started in 1860.

On the final stages of the XIX Century, North Americans created their first breed, the Boston-Terrier, the result of many cross-breeding in which we find as main relatives the Bulldog and the Bull Terrier, both from England. It was proclaimed to be the official pet in the Massachusetts County in 1979 by the governor, Edward King, who had been the owner of one specimen when he was younger.

Regards to the pedigree, the most accepted version is about a dog called “Hooper’s Judge” which was taken from Liverpool to Boston in 1870 and was the breed’s progenitor. Some connoisseurs of this dog breed estimate that it is the result of the cross between a Bulldog with some kind of Terrier, probably the English White Terrier. They also say that in their pedigree there are some Boxer, Bull Terrier, French Bulldog and American Pitbull Terrier genes.

Characteristics: :

The Boston Terrier is a lively dog, very intelligent, of straight fur, short head, compact composition, with a short tail. Its proportions are well balanced, and its brindle color, Bordeaux or black, often with consistent white spots. The head is well-proportioned to the dog’s size and in its expression; you can appreciate an elevated level of intelligence. The body is short and well-constructed, the limbs are strong and perfectly angled; the tail is short too. To avoid a body disproportion, none of its features must be too prominent. The animal gives the impression of being determined, strong and that can perform different activities with class and style; its appearance is natural and elegant. A proportional combination of color and white spots is a particular characteristic of a dog of this breed.

Well-defined bodies, a short back, besides of some unique characteristics, such as a squared face and jaw, and impressive marks, have produced an elegant, charming and genuinely American dog: the Boston Terrier. When we compare specimens of both genders, the only clear difference between them is the slight refinement in the female’s configuration.

In comparison to the English Bull Dog or the French Bull Dog –which is mostly confused with- the Boston Terrier must not have wrinkles on its skull, which must be flat and squared on the top. It has a blocky forehead, and with a defined stop.

It has dark eyes. The length between the limbs must be proportional to the body’s length, so the Boston Terrier has its squared shape. The Boston is a robust dog, which should not have a rough or bony appearance. The bones and muscles must be proportional to the body size and structure, and also highlight its expression.

The neck must have a length according to the body size, so it gives a balanced look to the body. The animal’s back must be short, so the body looks square-shaped, and must be horizontal and straight, with a slight curve in the loin up to the rump. The animal’s shoulders must be inclined, extended to the back. The animal’s thighs must have straight elbows and knees, and small and round paws with short nails. None of those parts should twist sideways. The coat must be short, straight, shiny and smooth, with no hair loose.

The dog’s color may be brindle, black or black with white spots. Also, there is a variety of the black color which looks red when it is exposed to sunlight. It is necessary for the dog to have a white mark on the snout and between the eyes, and a white-colored fore-chest to participate in official competitions. A dog which most of its body or head is white-colored must have several virtues that counter this problem.
This breed is divided into categories according to its weight: less than 6.8 kg; from 6.8 to less than 9 kg; from 9 and no more than 11.35 kg.

Temperament:

The Boston Terrier is cheerful, prideful, playful, caring and very dignified. It is a loyal dog to its owner. At home, it demonstrates to be quiet and acts like a good guardian dog. It is usually calm but it knows exactly how to protect himself. It finds the company of other dogs enjoyable.

Maintenance:

These animals are easy to maintain because its short hair and small size make them simpler to brush and train.
They must wash once a month because its skin may dry out and provoke dander. It is a breed which does not lose much fur.

Health:

This is a healthy breed, and if it is well fed, hosted and taking care of it correctly, it can live for 12-14 years. As it is a flat-faced breed, Boston Terrier may suffer genetic problems, like palate injuries or cleft lip, and they are also prone to endure paranasal sinuses problems. Some specimens do not have a good reaction to anesthesia.
