History:

The Borzoi is a breed which comes from Russia. It is the descendant of an Egyptian greyhound and it is very similar to the Russian shepherd. There is no accurate data about their origin in Russia. However, it is known that back to the year 1200 there were some documents which said it was used for hare hunting and other hunting activities. It has been the favorite breed for tsars and nobility families for centuries.

Doubtlessly, the Great Duke Nicholas was the best breeder of this breed and used to have around a hundred of kennels with these dogs. The main cause of the partial extinction of this breed in Russia was the fall of tsars and Russian nobility. Anyway, it is very spread around Europe and America.

Its first appearance in England was about century ago, when the Tsar Alexandre II gave as a present a Borzoi to Queen Victoria. Among all greyhounds, the Borzoi it is truly the most “noble” because of its characteristics and walk.

Characteristics:

Height bitch: 66~75 cm / Height male: 75~85 cm

Weight bitch: 25~40 kg / Weight male: 34~47 kg

It is strong and fast, between 66 and 79 cm tall and weighing from 25 to 48 kg. Its coat may be smooth and straight or slightly curly. It stands out because of its elegant appearance. It walks along distinctive and elegantly covered by a magnificent curly coat.

Its limbs are long, straight and muscular. The tail is long and hairy. It has a long and narrow head with fine ears which are placed backward. Its fur is long, smooth and curly, and all colors are accepted, but the most valuable are completely white; or white with gray, red and brindle markings. Unlike other breeds, white markings must not be well-defined; instead, they must fade gradually in other colors.

Temperament:

The Borzoi is sensitive, discreet and confident, although for some people they are very impulsive and arrogant. This dog is affectionate with its owners but very discreet with strangers. Indoors it is quiet and well-mannered, and outdoors it is really active.

Maintenance:

It is not difficult to take care of a Borzoi because of its sweet personality and low demand of attention. It is important to brush its long coat frequently. Also, it should have a soft bed to rest, because it may develop callus and ulcers easily.
It is recommended for them to have space to do daily exercise.

Health:

Borzois may be affected by Gastric Dilatation Volvulus or other metabolic illnesses.
This breed is sensitive to barbiturates, anesthetics, and products for fleas.
