Historia:

Originally, the American Akita’s history was the same as the Japanese Akita (also called Akita Inu). Since 1603, the Matagi dogs (medium-sized dogs were used for bear hunting), which came from the Akita’s area, started being used as fighting dogs. Since 1868, there were many crosses with larger breeds from Asia and Europe, including English Mastiffs, Great Danes, and the Tosa Inu. For this reason, the size of this breed got bigger. In 1908, thanks to the banning of dog fighting, this breed has been preserved, prospered and became a great Japanese breed. Thereafter, in 1931, nine dogs of this excellent breed were designed as natural monuments in Japan.

During the Second World War (1939-1945), this dog’s coat was used to make military clothes. The police ordered for all the dogs to be captured, except the Great Dane, which was used for military tasks. Some novice crossed their dogs with Great Dane specimens as an attempt of avoiding the law.

As the Second World War ended, the number of specimens of this breed had been reduced dangerously and the dogs were divided into three different varieties: the Matagi Akita, the fighting Akita dog, and the Great Japanese Dog. The situation of this breed was seriously disrupted. During the breed’s restoration process after the war, a lot of Akitas of this lineage, which had no influence from the Mastiff or the Great Danes, were taken to the USA by American soldiers. The Akitas which belonged to the Dewa lineage were intelligent dogs and capable of adapting to different areas. They charmed the USA breeders and the lineage started its develop thanks to the progressive increase of breeders and its bigger popularity.

The American Akita Club was created in 1956 and the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the breed don October of 1972 (they had an agreement which established none Japanese lineage could benefit a USA breeding). The American Akita became very different dogs to the ones in Japan, its origin country. Since 1955 in the USA, there were no changes in Akitas’ characteristics, because they were bred in a unique way. The situation is different in Japan, where the Akita was crossed with the Matagi Akita to get the ancient pure breed type.

Characteristics:

Height bitch: 61~66 cm / Height male: 66~71 cm

Weight bitch: 36~54 kg / Weight male: 45~66 kg

They are dogs of great physical strength, with a lot of substance and heavy bones; resistant to pain, and thanks to its double coat, resistant to low temperatures. This breed has a characteristical broad head, with the shape of an obtuse triangle; deep snout and relatively small eyes. Their tail is curled over the back and its coat is shown in different colors. The specimen may have the black mask or not; its head may be totally black colored, or blaze.

Male specimens, as in most breeds, are bigger than females (which are 10 cm less tall), but they are around 61 – 71 cm. An American Akita weighs between 32 and 59 kg.

Temperament:

The American Akita is a dog with a lot of attitude, is intelligent, dominant, territorial, energetic and a little stubborn. If it is well trained it will be friendly, loyal, protective and balanced. It can be very patient with children, but females get on better with them than males, which may get upset easily.

The Akita was not bred to live or work in big groups. On the contrary, they rather work alone or in partners, a notable preference nowadays. The Akita tends to be socially dominant over other dogs, and so it is important to make a gradual introducing of the moment of being with other dogs, especially strangers and of the same genre.

Maintenance:

It is essential to educate the American Akita since it is a puppy, because at that age it will discover it can bite, and so it may start a battle of bites. That is why it is recommended for it to have a resistant toy for it to bite it. It needs a self-confident owner, with a lot of attitude and which provides a good training. If there are any other pets in the house, it is important to familiarize it to it since little.

Health:

EThe American Akita is a rustic dog which, due to its size, it may be affected by hip dysplasia. Hypothyroidism and the Progressive Retinal Atrophy (mostly in old-age specimens) are common in this breed.
